STM Publishing Initiatives

As a leader in STM publishing, AIP is a proactive advocate for scholarly publishers in the media, governments, and important industry wide initiatives that seek to advance scientific publishing, the needs of individual researchers, and the general public. These include but are not limited to:

Initiatives

Crossref logoCrossRef is an independent membership association, founded and directed by publishers. AIP was a founding member and has served on its Board from inception.  The CrossRef mission is to connect users to primary research content, by enabling publishers to do collectively what they can’t do individually.

CrossCheck logoCrossCheck is an initiative started by CrossRef to help its members to prevent scholarly and professional plagiarism. Although there are several plagiarism detection tools already available, they are not well-suited to filtering academic content simply because they haven't had access to the relevant full-text literature to screen against. CrossCheck changes this by creating and continuously growing a database of current and archival scholarly literature.

RightsLink logoRightslink supports the STM Permission Guidelines for the use of materials in other published works, the ability to grant permissions by word, portion and full-text, and the ability to manage permissions by use and article over time. StixFonts logoThe Scientific and Technical Information Exchange (STIX) font creation project is the preparation of a comprehensive set of Unicode-based fonts that serve the scientific and engineering community in the process from manuscript creation through final publication, both in electronic and print formats. Toward this purpose, the STIX fonts are available, under royalty-free license, to anyone, including publishers, software developers, scientists, students, and the general public.
Counter logoCOUNTER provides an agreed international set of standards and protocols governing the recording and exchange of online usage data. The COUNTER Codes of Practice provide these standards and protocols and are published in full on this website.  AIP was a Charter Member of COUNTER and serves on the Executive Committee of COUNTER. Scitopia logoThe federated vertical search portal scitopia.org is a collaboration of 21 leading science and technology societies. Searching for a better way to help researchers quickly get to the quality content they need, these society publishers developed a gateway to the research most cited in scholarly work and patents. Scitopia.org searches the entire electronic libraries of the leading voices in major science and technology disciplines and provides relevant results, without the noise of other Internet search engines. More than three and a half million documents, including peer-reviewed journal content and technical conference papers, spanning 350 years of science and technology can be searched through the site.
INASP logoINASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications) is a development charity that has been working to enhance worldwide access to information since 1992. As part of the Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERI) INASP work with publishers and networks of libraries to enable access to scholarly information using ICTs within the developing and emerging countries TRANSFER logoThe TRANSFER Code of Practice provides guidelines for publishers to ensure that journal content remains easily accessible by librarians and readers when there is a transfer between parties.

PERii logoPERii - PERii is the second five-year phase of INASP's Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information, which focuses on the needs of people in developing and emerging countries in areas such as:

  • affordable access to international scholarly literature
  • successful writing, publishing and communication of research from developing and emerging countries
  • effective use, evaluation and management to support research
  • development of modern, digital research libraries
  • advice and advocacy around the role of research communication and the people engaged in it for sustainable and equitable development.
